Renewable Energy Sources

Renewable Energy Sources include wind, solar, hydro-electric and tidal power as well as geothermal energy and biomass. The increase of the share of RES in the European energy mix will enable the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and can subsequently contribute to the combat of climate change and the decrease of the EU’s dependency on imported energy.

  • The EU has set ambitious targets for Member States towards 2020 and to this end has adopted Directive 2009/28/EC of 23 April 2009 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources, amending and subsequently repealing Directives 2001/77/EC and 2003/30/EC
